The Lijadu Sisters’ 1976 album “Danger” marked their radical first international release, featuring politically charged anthems like “Cashing In,” the funk-laden opening track “Danger,” and the hit “Life’s Gone Down Low,” which was later sampled by Nas. With lyrics primarily in English, the album drew on Afrobeat, reggae, and soul, beginning a fruitful collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Biddy Wright. Wright, who played most of the instruments with assistance from traditional drummers and percussionists, was praised for his production that highlighted the sisters’ unique vocal harmonies.
Hailed as one of the best Nigerian albums of its time, “Danger” has influenced many younger artists. Kehinde Lijadu (22 October 1948 – 9 November 2019) and Taiwo Lijadu (born 22 October 1948) performed as the Lijadu Sisters from the mid-1960s to the 1980s, achieving success in Nigeria and modest success in the U.S. and Europe. Known for their mix of Afrobeat, jazz, and disco, the sisters retired in the late 1980s but occasionally performed during the 2010s until Kehinde’s death in 2019. They were also cousins of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti.
