Umu Udubonch - Egedege Instrumentals | Umu Udubonch songs

Egedege Instrumentals is the captivating instrumental rendition of the renowned Egedege cultural dance, performed by Umu Udubonch. Egedege Dance is a distinguished traditional dance form, celebrated for its royal elegance and deep roots in Igbo culture, specifically from Southeastern Nigeria.

Founded in 1985, Egedege is a revival of an ancient dance originally performed by the ancestors of present-day Unubi. Initially a moonlight dance for the youth, it has since evolved to align with contemporary trends while preserving its cultural essence. The performance is a harmonious blend of songs, dance, instrumentation, and vibrant traditional attire.

The dance commences with elaborate fluting, signaling the entrance of the group led by the queen, who is a central figure in the performance. The queen’s arrival is a grand affair: she is shaded by a large umbrella carried by one man, while another fans her from behind. She takes the stage, and the singing begins only when she reaches the microphone, adding to the ceremony’s regal ambiance. Sometimes, the queen herself dances to the rhythm of the instruments, enhancing the performance’s allure.

Egedege dance gained widespread popularity thanks to Theresa Onuorah from Unubi Town. Known for her vibrant performances, Onuorah embodies the spirit of the dance, which is named after a local term signifying wealth and bravery. This is fitting, as the Egedege dance is traditionally performed in royal courts or for affluent families, highlighting its cultural significance and status as a timeless classic in Igbo tradition.
